The root cause was that we did not program the slave unit voltage level using the Limit button to observe the value. It appeared that the slave was being programmed by the master since the slave voltage display tracks the master voltage display. In reality, the slave remained programmed to zero because in Safe Start mode, the programmed voltage and current levels are at zero when the units are powered on. Changing the master voltage level gives a possible false impression that the slave is also programmed to that level, when in fact the slave is “stuck” in Constant Voltage (CV) mode. In CV mode, the slave will never output any current. By pressing the slave’s limit button, adjusting the voltage setting higher than the master, setting the current limit, and enabling the outputs, the slave will then deliver current. While this is explained in the user’s manual, there is no indication that the scenario above could occur. Additionally, turning the voltage adjustment knob on the slave +does+ change the programmed value if the front panel is not locked out. The slave voltage display panel _does not indicate_ that the programmed value is changing unless the limit button is pressed. It is possible to turn the slave’s voltage knob down to the point where the slave drops out of Constant Current (CC) mode. If the slave drops out of CC mode, back to CV mode, the output current will drop to zero. My statement in the original post that the turning the voltage adjustment know has “no effect” is incorrect. The knob does have an effect. The user won’t see numbers change unless the limit button is pressed. |
